The mighty River Rhine is one of Europe's longest rivers, flowing over 800 miles from its source in the Swiss Alps to Holland, where it meets the North Sea. Since the days when Roman legions marched north, the Rhine has acted as a border and trading post and its shores are consequently packed with historical points of interest. The Rhine Gorge

The Jewel in the Rhine's fabulous crown must however be the Rhine Gorge, a short stretch of the Middle-Rhine between Mainz and Koblenz, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and where each and every turn reveals another fairytale castle. This is also wine country and myriad vineyards cling to the steep slopes of the Rhine, particularly around the pretty town of Rüdesheim.

Along the banks of the Rhine are historic towns such as Strasbourg, with its maze of narrow streets and canals, Mainz, the city of Gutenberg, Roman Koblenz at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle, Bonn, the birthplace of Beethoven and Cologne, where a fabulous old town is home to one of Europe's finest cathedrals.
