L'Estrambord is a 1-bedroomed cottage, sleeping 2, in the village of Mirabel-aux-Baronnies (Drôme), 10km N of Vaison-la-Romaine, 8km from Nyons, 40km NE of Orange (Michelin map: 527). VFB is delighted to have featured this property since 1984. Wednesday arrival.
This is a delightful stone house of great character dating from the 18th century and tastefully and imaginatively restored by its Dutch owner, retaining original beams, terracotta floors, niches and stone steps. Arranged on two floors and split levels (with steep staircases), the spacious accommodation has been converted with real flair mixing the rustic and the modern - low beams, eclectic furniture, a sunken bath, tasteful lighting. A feature of the vine-clad building (originally the village baker’s home) is its balcony overlooking the street and village rooftops to the Ventoux summit beyond. A small barbecue is available on request. The owner (whose home this is) lives next door during the rental period and is full of enthusiasm for the area and its history. A unique house of rustic character and refreshing charm. Church bells can be heard during the day but not during the evening after 10pm. The whole region surrounding this lively little village provides much of interest, not least the Roman towns of Orange and Vaison (with their summer arts festivals) and the spectacular scenery around the Mont Ventoux. Access is by a tiny, narrow village lane, and cars can be parked in a small car park some 60m from the property.
Accommodation: All on first floor: dining room with small kitchen area. Lower level: living room with divan (sleeps 1) and open fireplace, 1 twin-bedded room, bathroom with wc.
Activities: Lake at Vinsobres (3km). Swimming pools (June-Sept) in Vaison and in Nyons (8km) and campsite (3km). Tennis in Mirabel, Vaison and Nyons. Horse riding in St-Maurice (8km). Trout fishing in Buis-les-Baronnies (25km). Bicycle hire in Vaison and Nyons.
Services: Essential shops and services in Mirabel. All other shops and services in Nyons. Markets on Tuesdays in Vaison, Wednesdays in Valréas, Thursdays in Nyons and Fridays in Mirabel. Parking 60m away on a public square.
