Le Havre de Dercie is a 2-bedroomed cottage, sleeping 4 (+ baby), in a rural hamlet of 80 inhabitants, 3km from le Gua (Charente Maritime), 13km NE of Royan and the mouth of the Gironde estuary (Michelin map: 521). VFB is delighted to have featured this property since 1995. Saturday arrival.
A renovated 150-year-old house of pale stone in Charentais style set in a sleepy village of similarly picturesque buildings, amid extensive crop fields and the marais rich in birdlife. The interior is appealing, in its unelaborate country style, and is furnished and equipped to a good standard; heavy ceiling beams and a number of traditional and decorative items, including paintings, add character and create a homely atmosphere. Outside is a small, grassy garden (6m x 4m) with hollyhocks and flowering shrubs, enclosed by a stone wall. The main entrance opens onto a tiny shady square adjoining an old, disused chapel but the setting is peaceful and not immediately overlooked by neighbouring houses. The friendly owners (Monsieur speaks a little English) live in Mervent (approximately 130km away), but will either personally welcome their visitors or arrange for a neighbour to do so. An excellent little property, a stone’s throw from fascinating bird habitats, and a short drive from the oyster beds of Marennes, the beaches around Royan and the Ile d’Oléron, and the vineyards of Médoc beyond the Gironde estuary
Accommodation: Ground floor: kitchen, living/dining-room. First floor: 1 double and 1 twin-bedded room, cot, bathroom with wc
Activities: Sea at Royan. Nature reserve at Nieulle-sur-Seudre (4km). Indoor swimming pool, lake for swimming, tennis and bicycle hire at Saujon (4.5km). Horse riding, boat hire and golf (18 holes) at Royan. Summer art and crafts village in Mornac (15km).
Services: All shops and services at le Gua and Saujon. Market at Saujon on Tuesdays and Saturdays and at Royan daily (except Mondays). Parking on the road outside the property.

“Fantastic cottage – brochure doesn’t do it justice!” “Many thanks for a lovely week in this charming, cool gîte.” “We have relaxed here in the peace and quiet of this lovely spot.” "It was really good, the beaches near Meschers are very nice ... The gîte is really fun." "Great and peaceful area. Definitely returning to this beautiful gîte in the future. The best beaches were Royan and the one near Meschers. Both family friendly and great for swimming." "Have enjoyed an excellent week here in a lovely gîte ... Also enjoyed visits to Fort Louvois (ferry/causeway depending on tide), Ile Madame (again causeway tide dependent) Brouage, Réserve de Moëze, Rochefort ... A week is not enough in this area; we hope to come back some time." "This is the first time using VFB holidays and our experience has been really positive. It will be the first of many we hope! ... our two weeks here in this amazing spot have really allowed us to relax and slow down. We were welcomed by the Courtots with warm smiles and a bottle of red wine, which set the mood for our entire holiday. We instantly forgot about all the stress. This house is exactly what we hoped for and with a 16 month old we really wanted to have that right. Our spots are: St-Georges-de-Didonne - this beach is really safe for kids; Meschers - this was so beautiful; L'Eguille - worth a visit, the village itself is really pretty and there is a crêperie; Royan - Les Filets Bleus was by far the best meal we have had here. The market in Saujon is good for fresh fruit and veg, the boulangerie in Le Gua is good."
