Le Moulin des Barbiers is a 2-bedroomed cottage, sleeping 5, in a rural setting, 2km from the village of Lussas (Ardèche), 11km E of Aubenas (Michelin map 527). VFB is delighted to have featured this property since 1987. Saturday arrival.
This appealing, stone-built semi-detached property is a completely independent part of an early 12th-century house (facing away from the owners and with separate access), which was once the oil and flour mill of the Seigneur de Mirabel, whose ruined castle can still be seen on a nearby hilltop. It stands, facing east, surrounded by five acres of the owners’ land - fields, orchards and vineyards – a location that is delightfully rural, with views to steep hills, yet within very easy reach of the animated Ardechois village of Lussas. The interior is unelaborate but homely, with a welcoming ambience created by largely rustic furniture and bright decorative touches. Two spacious bedrooms are built into the roof-space where pitched beamed ceilings lend a characterful appearance. Outside, guests have use of a grassy garden and terrace on two levels (4 steps), (the lower level is a paved terrace) with built-in barbecue, offering sun, shade and seclusion; an idyllic spot for listening to birdsong and calling frogs. The charming owners, who live in the front section of the house with their cats and geese, will welcome guests here. The location, only 30km from the spectacular Ardèche Gorges, offers excellent way-marked walks; sites such as the bastide of Aubenas, nearby château at Tournon-sur-Rhône, magnificently sited on an outcrop above the celebrated St Joseph vineyards.
Accommodation: Ground floor: kitchen/living room, shower room, wc. First floor: 1 double-bedded room communicating with 1 triple-bedded room.
Activities: Swimming pool at Vals les Bains (14km). Tennis at Lussas. Horse riding at Darbres (4.5km). Lake for fishing (1km). Canoeing in river Ardèche (see owners to book). Gym / fitness centre in Aubenas.
Services: Baker, grocer, post office and 2 restaurants at Lussas. All shops and services at St Privat (9km), Aubenas and Villeneuve-de-Berg (8km). Market at Aubenas on Saturdays, and at Villeneuve-de-Berg on Wednesdays. Parking off the lane.
