Renoir in the 20th Century

Overview: 3 days / 2 nights from £189 per person, valid from 22 September until 6 January 2010
This autumn, Paris’ Grand Palais hosts a prestigious exhibition devoted to Pierre-Auguste Renoir, bringing together a stunning collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures from the latter period of the artist’s extensive career. On loan from public and private collections worldwide and complemented by works from Picasso, Maillol, Matisse and Bonnard, the exhibition invites visitors to discover a less well-known oeuvre by Renoir, a body of work reflecting a softer, more modern approach in style, form and technique, particularly apparent in his series of nudes. Our break includes entrance to the exhibition and also features two nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation at one of our centrally-located, hand-picked hotels plus travel by high-speed Eurostar™ direct to Paris, or by air from your local airport.

Region - Paris

Our hotels: Paris Hotels
Hand-picked for their standard, location and value for money, you can be assured that, whichever hotel you choose, you will never find yourself on the outskirts of the city, nor will you end up in one of the less fashionable areas of Paris. Instead, we offer the more attractive and romantic quarters such as the well-known Quartier Latin or La Madeleine, areas where you will always find a good choice of bars, bistros and brasseries, Métro stations and attractions close by. Due to the age and architectural design of city-centre buildings, most Parisian hotel rooms tend to be smaller than their UK counterparts (with correspondingly limited wardrobe and drawer space). However, you will always find comfortable rooms equipped with bath/wc or shower/wc, telephone and TV and double or twin beds. All hotels have a lift, but please check with us if this is important to you, as some floors may not be served. Finally, remember that if you need help choosing the hotel that suits you best, please do not hesitate to contact us – we’ll be delighted to help! Click here to download the Paris Hotels brochure.

Exhibition:
Recounting the second part of Renoir’s career from the beginning of the 1890s until his death in 1919, the exhibition explores Renoir’s break from Impressionism and his turn towards decorative and classical art, developing a technique which combined the Impressionist use of colour with the style of the great Masters such as Titian, Raphaël and Rubens.

Concentrating particularly on his domestic scenes such as Young Girls at the Piano and abundantly-fleshed nudes, the most celebrated of which must surely be The Bathers, Renoir was also greatly influenced by the landscapes of the South of France, particularly around his villa at Cagnes-sur-Mer. The exhibition is divided into no fewer than 15 different sections which explore the changes in Renoir’s style and inspiration in his latter years. Although often eclipsed by his Impressionist years, this exhibition brings this lesser-known period to the fore, marking Renoir as one of the Masters of modern painting.

The exhibition runs from 23 September until 4 January and is closed on Tuesdays, but is otherwise open from 1000 to 2200 daily (2000 on Thursdays). Although you bypass initial queues for tickets, you may still have to queue for admission especially at busy times such as weekends and French bank holidays (1 & 11 November).

Our short break includes:
• either return standard-class travel from St Pancras, Ashford or Ebbsfleet International by Eurostar™ direct to Paris
• or return scheduled flight from London or a selection of regional airports (supplements apply)
• two nights' bed and breakfast accommodation in your chosen hotel in central Paris
• entrance to the Renoir exhibition at the Grand Palais
