Location: BrusselsAnyone who has sampled the perfect blend of culture, architectural beauty, modern shopping and buzzing nightlife of the capital of Belgium and Europe will understand why it remains so popular. Here, the influences are overwhelmingly Flemish (although the language is French). Start at the Grand’Place, one of the most impressive squares you’ll ever see; there can be few better places to plan your itinerary and enjoy a Belgian beer than in one of its many bars. From the heart of Brussels, head uphill, winding through the various quarters that make up the city and you’ll unearth countless monuments along the way. You’ll also find plenty of small parks where you can enjoy a little respite from the bustle of the city. On colder days, why not visit the Royal Museums of Fine Arts? The city is particularly lively in December with a Christmas market, the largest of its kind in Belgium, although there is little let up in January and February – this is a cosmopolitan city that always lives life to the full. The Christmas Market in Brussels The Brussels Advent market has its roots deep in the Middle Ages and is the largest of its kind in Belgium. Perhaps unsurprisingly in the Capital of Europe, it has a distinctly multinational feel with stalls from just about every corner of the European Union. Running from 26 November until 2 January, small stalls spring up along an illuminated 2km route to offer everything from traditional handcrafted gifts, decorations and toys to mulled wine and local delicacies including marzipan, gingerbread and, of course, Belgian chocolates. Starting at the famous Grand’Place with its traditional Finnish Christmas tree and nativity scene, the path of the Christmas Market winds its way past the Bourse and place Sainte Catherine, finishing at the Marché aux Poissons where skaters join in the fun on the open-air ice rink, lit up by the spectacular ferris wheel. Daily events add to this enchanting atmosphere and include jugglers, musicians, carol singers, processions and traditional Flemish carillons made up of dozens of bells.
