For starters, it boasts one of France’s finest museums outside Paris – the Palais des Beaux Arts – which is home to a prestigious collection of paintings, including many from the Flemish school such as Van Dyck and Rubens, as well as an impressive display of French, Italian and Spanish works. If shopping’s your passion, then browse amongst the elegant boutiques which line the cobbled streets, or wander through the lively Wazemmes flea and flower market on a Sunday morning or through the lovely Christmas Market on the place Rihour. In the evening, nightlife is centred round a wide selection of bars and restaurants where the best of French and Flemish food and drink are combined. With stunning 17th-century architecture to complete the picture, you’ll quickly understand why Lille is such a revelation.
